Urban’s Family

Boy, did I luck out on my second chance!

Hi, it is me, Urban. My old owners had dropped me off at the shelter’s night drop with a muzzle on. It was a small space and I was scared. I couldn’t even pant because of the muzzle. That experience made me very unsure of humans and I was feeling let down. I was put in quarantine because the shelter thought I was unpredictable and aggressive but being dumped the way I was, could you blame me? One day, these two really nice people came to visit me and I charged and growled at them in the kennel. They still wanted to meet me though so the kennel worker took me out of my kennel and we all went outside for a walk. They started petting me and I kinda started liking them, they were really nice to me and made me feel less scared. I think they liked me too and even though they didn’t take me that day, I was hoping that they would come back. There were other people that looked at me but they weren’t interested. The next week, the nice man that had visited me before came back to see me again. He took me into a room and worked with me, testing me to see how I would react to different things. I had a feeling he was one of the good guys and I had no reason to be scared so I did my best to be myself. He must have liked my responses because he decided to rescue me. I was excited to have a second chance at life! My experience with my old family wasn’t good but I wasn’t going to let that bring me down anymore.

When we got home, I was surprised at how many dogs were there. At first, I was a little unsure about playing with them but figured out that I just needed to be myself. I played with all my foster brothers and sisters and I thought, “wow, this is what a dog’s life should be!”. My foster dad worked with me every day to build my trust in people again and I started to come around. I was still a little hesitant towards new people but I was a lot better than before. Once I started getting more comfortable in those situations and my foster dad thought I was ready to meet potential forever families, photos of me and my bio was added to the website. There were some applications that came in for me but they just weren’t the right fit. Then there was an application from a gentleman out of state who seemed like he could be a good fit for me but my foster dad was hesitant because out of state adoptions are really hard to do. But after talking to the gentleman several times, my foster dad decided to give him a chance if it meant finding the right home for me. So he talked to all the references and asked a lot of questions. He then had several more conversations with this gentleman about me, my shelter experience, and my issues. This gentleman was not scared away at all, he told my foster dad that he would continue working with me on any issues I had and it wouldn’t be a problem at all. My foster dad decided that this would be the perfect fit for me. I was excited because I knew that he was very picky about who would be my forever family. My forever family had to be very special and understand the dog that I am and be patient and loving to me. And that’s exactly what he found for me!

The night before my big day when I would meet my future dad, my foster dad had a talk with me and told me that I needed to be a very good boy and that this home is a great fit for me. The next morning, we loaded up the car and went to the park where my new daddy was waiting for me. I was nervous at the beginning but I knew everything was going to be fine, I trust my foster dad to find only the best for me. We met and I knew that it was meant to be. The really cool thing is that my family will be just me and my new dad so we will have lots of time together getting to know each other and hanging out. Anyway, the adoption paperwork was filled out and we took a family photo. I wasn’t even anxious, I felt really relaxed! When it was time to go, my new dad opened up the back of his SUV and I jumped into the back and laid down. I was given a white bone and started to chew on it and I was all set for the long drive to my new home in New Mexico. We got home late at night and I was really tired so I fell right asleep. I woke up early the next morning and I jumped on the bed and gave my new dad a couple kisses to say thank you for adopting me!
