Lacey’s Family

My journey filled with friends, fun memories and a forever family!

Hi, it’s Lacey, the sweet senior gal that was found with my pup Kingston in Lancaster. We had been wandering the streets for a long time and one day wandered into a yard where a nice person took us in and brought us to an animal hospital to get cleaned up. They fed, bathed and took care of us because they knew that we didn’t have any one else looking out for us. I had been taking care of and protecting Kingston for so long that it sure was nice to be taken care of for a change! It was a relief to know that we were safe and I didn’t have to worry about anything happening to Kingston anymore. These people were so nice and gave us so much love. At first, it was hard to completely trust that this was for real but as the days went by, I started believing that this could be the beginning of a new life for us. We were both shy with everyone but that’s because we just weren’t used to having people around us all the time and them being so concerned about our well being. They knew that finding us a new home would be the best thing for us so Aunt Kelly who was one of the people taking care of us reached out to GS Safe Haven to see if they would be willing to meet me and Kingston and maybe even take us into the rescue. They said they would meet us so one day, they came out for a visit and we were trying to be on our best behavior. Kingston was really excited while I was a little more cautious and shy because I didn’t know what they expected of us. I just knew I wanted to win them over so even though I was shy, I showed them I really am a sweet, loving girl. They spent some time with us and ultimately decided that we were going to be Safe Haven dogs! I was going to miss Aunt Kelly and all my friends at the clinic but knew it was the best thing for me and Kingston. Just to make sure that we didn’t belong to anyone, we had to wait before we could go into our new foster homes. No one claimed us so we were picked up and brought to our new homes. We went to stay at different foster homes which I was a little worried about because I couldn’t look out for Kingston but I had a good feeling about Safe Haven and knew they would take good care of my boy.

When I got to my foster home, it was cool because I had a lot of room to run around, in the house and in the yard. Even though I was still shy with people, I realized that dogs could be really fun to play with. My foster brother taught me how to play tag and we had so much fun running around the yard together and wrestling. Even though I loved all that action, I also loved to relax and get belly rubs too. During the time in my foster home, I got to meet and hang out with other foster dogs. The big surprise for me came one day when Kingston came to stay! I was so happy to see him and be reunited with him. And he was doing so good, all grown up, I was really proud of him! Instead of having to look out for him like a mom would, we became great friends and play buddies. I loved having him with me in my foster home but eventually the time came for him to go to his forever family and I had to say goodbye. I was really happy for Kingston though. I just hoped that I would find my forever home soon.

As time passed, I learned to be a little less shy with people and even enjoyed some of the attention I got at adoption events. One day, I started not feeling too good. I wasn’t sure what was going on but I kept throwing up and could not keep anything down, not even water. I felt so weak and tired so my foster mom knew something was seriously wrong and took me to the vet. They did x-rays, tests and an ultrasound and found a tumor that was completely blocking my intestines. I needed to have surgery as soon as possible to have it removed and they were hoping that the tumor had not spread. My foster mom was so worried about me. She gave me lots of love and told me everything was going to be okay before they took me to the back to get me prepped for surgery. Good news! The surgery went well, the tumor didn’t spread and there were no lasting complications. I was on the road to recovery!

I made a full recovery and was back to my young, playful self in no time! A month later, my foster mom took me to meet a nice man who was interested in fostering me. He was looking for a laid back companion that would keep him company throughout the day and I sounded like the perfect dog for him. He really liked me even though I was kinda shy. He wanted to foster me so a week later, my foster mom took me back there to stay. He had a big house and a big yard that was really fun to explore and it did take me a little while to get used to my new surroundings but what I loved best was I got all the attention! I was the only dog in the home and my new foster dad loved hanging out with me. Over time, we really bonded with each other. Every time my old foster mom would come by to pick me up to take me to an adoption event, my foster dad would say that he hoped I won’t get adopted so I could keep staying at his home. I think he was falling in love with me and even though he didn’t intend to adopt me at the beginning, he was seriously considering it. We were just so good together, a great match!

Over the summer, my foster dad, mom and me took a short trip down to a big park. When we got there, there was a picnic going on with a lot of people and dogs. It was the GS Safe Haven Annual Family Picnic! I got so excited when I saw my old foster mom and Kingston. What a great reunion! We all had so much fun. Before we left, my foster dad told my old foster mom that he made a decision. He decided to adopt me!!

A few weeks later, my old foster mom and Uncle Tom came for a visit and to complete the adoption paperwork. I was so happy to see them but even more happy for why they were here! My special day finally came, I was being adopted and have a forever family of my own!! It was a long road and I made friends and lots of memories along the way, but it was worth the wait! I am such a lucky girl and I love my family more than anything in this world!
