Adoption FAQs

How much time does the adoption process take?

The process from start to finish could take from 1 to 4 weeks.

What is the first step in the adoption process?

The first step is to fill out our online Adoption Application.

If I am the first person to fill out an adoption application for a specific dog, does that give me priority on adopting that dog?

No, we do not operate on a first come, first served basis. It is not about what is best for you, our goal is to find the best fit for the dog.

Can I take the dog home on the same day as the meet and greet?

No. All the steps in our adoption process have to be completed before the dog is placed. This ensures your family is the right fit for the dog.

Does my whole family have to be present at the meet and greet?

Yes, it is a requirement. It is important for all members of the household to meet the dog and be in agreement about adopting a dog.

If I have another dog(s), should I bring them to the meet and greet?

Yes. We will facilitate a proper introduction between the dogs and see how they get along together. It is important that your dog’s personality is a good match for the dog you are interested in adopting.

Can we foster the dog first to make sure he or she is the right fit for my family?

Yes, we encourage potential adopters to foster first if you are unsure whether the dog would be a good fit. We do require a minimum foster period of at least 2 weeks to allow the dog to adjust to his or her new surroundings.

Do you place dogs outside the state of California?

We do on a case by case basis. It depends on your location and whether we can do a home visit.

Is the adoption fee tax deductible?

No, it is a fee, not a donation. When you receive a tangible item or service in return for your payment, it is not considered a donation. An amount paid beyond the stated adoption fee may be tax deductible. Please consult a tax professional for more information.

Do you adopt to people in the Armed Forces?

Unfortunately we do not adopt to people who are on active duty.

Where do you get your dogs?

About 90% come from “high kill shelters” and about 10% come from owner surrenders.

Do your dogs get along with children and cats?

It depends on the energy levels of the children and the cats. A GSSH adoption consultant will facilitate a proper introduction between the dog and the children and/or cats to make that determination.

Do I have to live in a home with a yard in order to adopt one of your dogs?

No. As long as you provide the dog with plenty of exercise, playtime and toys to keep the dog mentally stimulated, a yard is not necessary.

What are your adoption fees?

The adoption fees are posted on our Adoption Process page as well as our Available Dogs page. The fees range from $485-$285.

Do you offer a discount if we adopt two dogs at the same time?

Yes, we do offer a discount on the second dog but this is only applies to adult dogs. Puppies under 1 year old are not included in this special discount.

Do you accept credit cards for the adoption fee?

Yes. We accept Master Card, Visa and American Express. We charge a 3% transaction fee for this service which is added to the total.
